Voltages induced in cables or instruments by nearby electric transmission lines. Characterized by the frequency of power transmission (usually 60 or 50 Hz, or 16 2/3 Hz for some electric railways) or its harmonics. Coupling may be capacitive, by electromagnetic induction (especially if the transmission lines are unbalanced), or by leakage currents from ground-return systems. The problem is most severe when the cables and sensors are not well insulated electrically.
