(jī rō kum, p∂s) A gimbal-mounted gyroscope incorporating unbalanced masses which make the axis of rotation precess about true north. See Figure G-10. If a torque tries to change the plane of rotation of a gyroscope, the gyroscope axis rotates about an axis that is perpendicular to both the gyroscope’s axis of spin and the torque; this is called precession.
