Making and interpreting measurements of physical properties to determine subsurface conditions, usually with an economic objective, e.g., discovery of fuel or mineral deposits. Properties measured include seismic traveltime and waveshape changes, electric potential differences, magnetic and gravitational field strength, temperature, etc. Synonyms: applied geophysics, geophysical prospecting.
