A unit of acceleration or of gravitational force per mass, used in gravity measurements. One Gal=1 cm/s2=10–2 m/s2=10–2 newton/kg. The Earth’s nominal gravity is 980 Gal. Named for Galileo Galilei (1564–1642), Italian physicist.
