Breaking the rock of a producing formation by subjecting it to very high fluid pressure, a method of stimulating production. Proppants (q.v.) may be injected into the fractures to keep them open when the fluid pressure is released. Called hydraulic fracturing. Explosives were used for fracturing until the 1930s.
