1. That space in which an effect, e.g., gravity, electric, or magnetic, is measurable. Fields are characterized by continuity and have one and only one value associated with every location within the space. 2. The outdoors, where geophysical surveys are made. 3. A large tract or area containing valuable minerals, such as a coal field or an oil field; see resource. 4. Space on a storage or display device where related arrangements of characters or digits represent a quantity, amount, name, identity, etc. 5. Domain (q.v.).
