Irregularities that induce turbulent flow. Drag on a cable pulled transversely through the water is less for turbulent than for nonturbulent flow. Irregularities (such as short strings fastened to the cable) create small vortices that reduce fluid friction. A pulled cable without fairing alternately tends to shed large vortices accompanied by spurts of motion, causing vibration and inducing noise.
