(i lip’ soid) A solid figure for which every plane cross-section is an ellipse. An ellipsoid of revolution can be generated by rotating an ellipse about one of its axes. An ellipsoid of revolution is usually used to approximate the geoid (q.v.). Some standard ellipsoids are listed in Figure G-2. See Geodetic Reference System.
