The Hooke’s law relationship between stress and strain, each of which are 2^{nd} rank tensors, so that the elasticity tensor is a 4^{th} rank tensor. However, because of symmetry, stress and strain can each be expressed as 6×1 vectors so that the elasticity tensor can be expressed as a 6×6 matrix. See Figure H-7.
