{{#category_index:E|edit}} To prepare data, text, etc. for processing. 1. Specifically, to prepare a digital tape containing geophysical information. Editing often involves rearranging data (reformatting), testing data validity, deleting unwanted data (killing), selection of data, insertion of data (such as headers, process parameters, or instructions), breaking the data up into blocks (gapping), etc. Editing may involve some calculations (such as removing the effects of the gain changes that were made in recording and substituting a correction for spherical divergence). It may include static-shift and normal-moveout corrections. 2. The removal of data that are judged not to be members of the set to be analyzed (perhaps because a measurement does not fit with other data), e.g., the removal from navigation-satellite data of Doppler counts for which the satellite was low in the sky.
