{{#category_index:C|cylindrical divergence}} Decrease in the amplitude of a wave with distance because of geometrical spreading. The energy spreads out as a wavefront expands in a larger circle and hence the energy density varies inversely as the distance. Surface waves undergo cylindrical divergence whereas body waves undergo spherical divergence.
