1. Bringing a system into a desired state by its own actions. The execution of a bootstrap program, a set of permanently stored instructions; it may involve loading (from external storage) and executing a set of instructions to initialize a computer. 2. To attempt the impossible, as ‘‘to lift oneself by one’s bootstraps.’’
