Working out the history of a sedimentary basin, usually by computer modeling. Basin modeling involves integrating inferred or historical sediment influx and compaction, erosion and deformation, heat transfer, and water flow, to work out the history of hydrocarbon generation, expulsion, and migration. The resulting pressure-temperature history is important in determining hydrocarbon generation and hence a basin’s prospectivity.
