{{#category_index:B|Backus filter}} (bok’ ∂s) An inverse filter that removes the effects of reverberation involving a simple water bottom. The filter's z-transform expression is

$1+2kz^{q}+k^{2}z^{2q},\$

where k is the water-bottom reflection coefficient and qt_s is the two-way traveltime through the water layer if t_s is the sample interval. See Backus (1959).
