The Denver Geophysical Society (DGS) is a nonprofit organization operated by its members to promote the science of geophysics, especially as it applies to exploration, and to promote fellowship and cooperation among those persons interested in geophysical problems. DGS operates on general donations, event sponsorship and member participation.

Members are very important to DGS and the development of the society. Membership runs from January 1st through December 31st each year. Dues are $35 for Active and Associate memberships and $5 for Student memberships. Membership renewals will be mailed out and can be renewed from October through December of the prior membership year.

To become a member, complete the online application or download the Membership Form and send back to the Denver Geophysical Society office (instructions available on form).

Events & Courses

DGS offers numerous educational Luncheons, Study Groups and Short Courses as well as Networking Happy Hours and recreational activities like the Golf Tournament and Rockies Games throughout the year.

Monthly Luncheon

The monthly luncheon is held at The Brown Palace Hotel on the second Thursday of every month (unless otherwise noted). The upcoming topic and speaker is announced approximately 2 weeks before the event date. Registration is available online once the topic is announced until the Tuesday before the talk. $25 for Members, $32 for NonMembers - includes coffee, water/ iced tea, salad, plated lunch, dessert, 1 drink ticket and talk. $5 Meeting Only - good for watching the meeting only. Sponsorship is available each month. Advertising is available on the looping PowerPoint prior to to the talk.

Monthly Microseismic Study Group

The Microseismic Study Group is a forum to present and discuss issues related to acquisition, processing and interpretation of microseismic data. It is designed for geoscientists interested in discussing case studies and furthering their understanding of all things microseismic. The meeting is typically a 20 minute presentation followed by 20-30 minutes of discussion. The upcoming location, topic and speaker is announced approximately 2-3 weeks before the event date. The study group is typically held on the first or second Tuesday following the monthly luncheon - please keep posted as these dates and locations do change each month.

The Student Challenge Bowl

Eight teams of two students (graduate and undergraduate) from Universities or Colleges are invited to compete in a fast-paced multiple choice Q&A about geophysics and geology to win a trip to The International Student Challenge Bowl Competition at the SEG International Exposition. Registration and Sponsorship is available online from approximately January to the event date in March.

3D Seismic Symposium

Hosted in conjunction with The Rocky Mountain Association of Geologists, this day long symposium features twelve talks, exhibitor booths and networking for both geophysicists and geologists. Theme, topics and speakers are typically announced in December and registration is open in January. Sponsorship and Exhibitor Booths are available.

The BIG Industry Happy Hour

The biggest social networking happy hour in the Rocky Mountains among multiple geoscience societies and associations is held once a quarter at Marlowe's Restaurant in Downtown Denver. Registration is not required but the first 200 people through the door will receive a drink ticket and appetizers. Sponsorship is available for the full year of events or for a single event.

Arapahoe Basin Ski Trip

The annual Ski Trip is typically held in March or April each year at the Arapahoe Basin Ski Park. Registration is required and includes bus transportation to and from the park, snacks and drinks throughout the day and lunch. Lift tickets are available for purchase at a group discounted rate. Sponsorship is available.

SEG Distinguished Instructor Short Course

The Society of Exploration Geophysicists and Denver Geophysical Society presents a one-day short course on a topic of current and wide-spread interest. The date and location of the Distinguished Instructor Short Course (DISC) changes each year but is announced approximately 6-8 weeks before the course date. Registration is required. Sponsorship is available.

Rockies Game Day

The Rockies Game Day is typically held in June or July and offers baseball fans a creative way to network. A networking happy hour is hosted prior to the game where drinks and appetizers are provided by sponsors. Members are invited to bring one family member or friend at the same price. Tickets are available at a discounted rate online, registration is required. Sponsorship is available.

Golf Tournament

This annual tournament is a staple in the Denver geoscience community! The scramble style tournament is held at Arrowhead Golf Course with a 7:30am and 1:00pm shotgun starts. Registration includes green fees, cart, (2) meals throughout the day, drink tickets, ditty bag, and immeasurable networking opportunities. Registration and sponsorship sell out within a couple weeks of the tournament, so please get your teams and sponsorship request in early!

Holiday Luncheon

The Holiday Luncheon is DGS' second largest networking event of the year! Held at the Grand Hyatt overlooking Downtown Denver, the December luncheon allows DGS to give thanks to all the volunteers and members that have contributed throughout the year. Registration includes lunch, a drink ticket and a chance to win numerous door prizes. Sponsorship is available.

Holiday Silent Auction

The Silent Auction benefits the Denver Geophysical Society Foundation that contributes 100% of the proceeds from the auction to the scholarship fund. Funds are distributed to qualifying geoscience students through SEG each year.

Attendees of the luncheon are able to bid on the available packages, many of which may include; sports memorbilia, sporting event tickets, concert tickets, company services, various items, DGS sponsorship packages, etc. DGS seeks items that are minimum $25 in value.
