Iain M. Mason, David J. Buchanan, and Anthony K. Booer received the 1980 SEG Best Paper in Geophysics Award for their paper Channel wave mapping of coal seams in the United Kingdom.[1]

Biography 1980[2]

David J. Buchanan received his B.Sc. in physics in 1968, and his Ph.D. in theoretical physics in 1971, both from the University of St. Andrew's in Scotland. From 1971 until late 1973 he was a member of the computational physics group at Culham Laboratory, U.K.A.E.A.

Since 1974 he has been head of the geophysics research group at the National Coal Board's Mining Research and Development Establishment. His current fields of interest are computational physics, seismic data processing and wave propagation, with a particular reference to seismic channel waves in coal seams.

Dr. Buchanan is member of SEG and the Institute of Physics.
