The Coastal Bend Geophysical Society (CBGS) is a nonprofit professional society chartered under the SEG since 1984. The organization seeks to promote the science of geophysics whilst fostering fellowship and cooperation among professionals in industry and academia and students.

Membership

CBGS currently has 60 active members, 4 honorary members and 60 student members. To become a member, download and complete the Membership form [1].

Events

Monthly Luncheon

The CBGS in conjunction with the Corpus Christi Geological Society (CCGS) hosts a monthly luncheon with a guest speaker focused on a geophysical topic of interest.

Workshops/Distinguished Lectures

The CBGS hosts frequent workshops focused on fundamental geophysical problems/processes in the industry. In addition to workshops, CBGS will also host SEG Distinguished Lecturers based on applicability of the talk to the membership interest in a certain topic/talk.

Golf Tournament

The CBGS organizes an annual Golf Tournament in October to fund its scholarship program.

Scholarship

Annual Scholarship Award

The CBGS is a non-profit organization operating on membership fees, general donations and sponsorship. In an effort to support geophysical education and the allied sciences, the society awards scholarships to local university students based on the following criteria.

  • Scholarships are open to both undergraduate and graduate students
  • Must have declared Major Geophysics, or Geology with a concentration in Geophysics or Petrophysics
  • Preference is given to students attending Coastal Bend schools (TAMU-K, TAMU-CC, Del Mar College), then to Coastal Bend natives attending other universities
  • Must have GPA 3.0 and be in goof standing with the school
  • Must make effort to attend a Coastal Bend Geophysical Society Meeting in Corpus Christi, Texas after being awarded a scholarship to be recognized by the society.

Travel Fund

The CBGS also manages a travel fund designated to helping students attend professional conferences, workshops and meetings outside of South Texas.

Student Criteria for awarding travel grant: A currently enrolled student may apply for a travel grant once the following criteria are met.

  • Must have declared major in Geophysics, or Geology with a concentration in Geophysics or Petrophysics.
  • Must have a GPA of at least 3.0 and be in good standing with the school.
  • Must not have already received a travel grant in the current academic year. Exceptions may be given to students presenting at more than one conference in an academic year.

Other considerations for award:

  • Preference will be given to students presenting posters or giving talks
  • Preference will be given to the SEG annual conference or other SEG workshops/meetings then other industry conferences hosted by AAPG, AGU, GSA and EAGE etc.
  • Amount awarded will be determined by the CBGS board.
