The SEG Student Chapter UNT is a group of students from the careers of geology; engineering in geophysics and geodesy; Surveying engineering; Civil Engineering and geography, from the National University of Tucumán, in Argentina. The Chapter was formed in 2019 after the Challenge Bowl that was organized in Tucumán.

The Society of Exploration Geophysicists Student Chapter of the National University of Tucumán offers its members the opportunity to be part of diverse and interdisciplinary activities, which is possible thanks to the wide diversity among its members. Our activities include courses, webinars, conferences, forums, and so forth.

"HYDROPLUS: Water-retaining hydrogel with natural nutrients" by Denis Alvarez Contreras and Axel Leonel Córdoba
In this talk, Denis Alvarez Contreras, a geologist, and Axel Leonel Córdoba, an advanced geology student at UNCOMA, present the product of their creation, Hydroplus. This is a granular powder that turns liquid water into a solid and incorporates essential nutrients for plant growth. Hydroplus hydrates with irrigation water and provides it slowly as the plant needs it.
With this innovative technology they seek to create a culture of appreciation and optimization of water use, and combat water scarcity in Argentina. Their vision is to impact the largest number of people in the world about the need to save irrigation water, lower operating costs and increase productivity in the field. Likewise, to train, help and educate vulnerable families so that they can cultivate their own vegetable gardens in order to achieve their own sustainability and that of their community, and in this way combat hunger.

"The role of the female geoscientist" by Rosina Barberis and Ivette Barrios
In this Webinar organized by the student chapters SEG UNT and SEG Women's Network Argentina, Ivette Barrios and Rosina Barberis, geophysical engineer and geologist respectively, talked to us about the new gender perspectives, both in the mining industry and in the oil industry. In addition, the changes produced over the years regarding female participation in the industry, and the different obstacles faced by women geoscientists were discussed.

"Experience: YPF scholarship recipient" by Abigail Brito
In this Webinar, Abigail Brito, a Geodesic and Geophysical Engineering sophomore student at the National University of Tucumán, shares her experience as a YPF scholarship recipient and encourages other students to apply for this opportunity. YPF is an Argentine energy company dedicated to the exploration, exploitation, distillation, distribution and production of electricity, gas and oil.
As part of the program, Abigail was assisted by a company mentor who helped address her concerns about her career, the company, and her future as a professional. At the end of the program, Abigail and other fellows were challenged to solve a usual problem of the company: unconventional oil extraction. Abigail's project was a finalist in the competition.

"Series of talks on Geosciences" by SEG Student Chapters from Argentina and Uruguay
The series of talks was organized by the SEG student chapters of the Udelar, UBA, UNC, UNS, UNSJ and UNT universities. In total, 9 virtual meetings were held over three weeks, given by professionals in the earth sciences:
- "Exploration geophysics for the energy transition" by Pablo Gristo Savornin.
- "Characterization of reservoirs through deductive and inductive methods" by Luis Stinco.
- "Structural seismic interpretation" by Alvis Campos.

"Degradation, Monitoring and 3D Digitalization processes of Menhirs from a Geological perspective" by Sergio Nicolás Nieva
In this Webinar, Sergio Nicolás Nieva, recently graduated geologist from the National University of Tucuman, presents his research on the degradation process suffered by the mehirs located in Tafí del Valle, and proposes useful techniques for future degradation monitoring.
The menhirs consist of huge elongated rocks engraved 2,000 years ago by the ancestors of Tafí del Valle, in the province of Tucumán. The largest menhir is about 5 meters high and 1 meter wide. All the menhirs studied by Nicolás were affected by the passing of the years in the open until they were transferred to the museum where they are currently exhibited.
These ancient manifestations of art and religion are part of the Argentine cultural heritage and therefore must be preserved by the community by conducting periodic studies on their status, he explains.

"Geoelectrics mixture of expertise and science" by Adrián Silva Busso and Mario Chury
In this Webinar, two presentations of 45 minutes each were shared. In the first module Mario Chury, an electrical engineer, teaches us the fundamental principles of geoelectrics and what are the electrical characteristics of materials, the resistivity of the rocks and the physical factors present in the subsoil that influence their value measured. He also explains the concept of apparent resistivity, the geometric characteristics of the different electrode devices, and the most widely used geoelectric prospecting techniques, such as the Horizontal electrical sounding (HES) and the Vertical electrical sounding (VES).
After a short breaks of 15 minutes begins the the second module, in wich Adrián Silva Busso, doctor in geological sciences, introduces us to the interpretation of an aquifer as a water-rock binomial due to its resistive response. Adrián shows us the different criteria that can be taken into account when locating a VES and mentions the conceptual hydrogeological models, he also discusses the geoelectrical methods to study permafrost, soil mechanics, hypersaline zones, and others.

"Soil vibration measurements and their applications" by Francisco Calderón
In this Webinar, Francisco Calderón, civil engineer, introduces us the physical fundamentals "vibration" and "frequency", the mathematical tool "Fourier transform" and the results of its use. Francisco shows us the different equipment used to measure ground vibrations (accelerometers, seismographs, geophones and radar) and develops the concept of seismic microzoning. At the end of his speech he details how, from a study of the vibrational frequencies of the subsoil, hidden lava tubes can be identified in it, based on a study work that he recently carried out in La Pampa, Argentina.

"Geological and Seismic Characterization of Unconventional Reservoirs" by Karina Anis
In this Webinar, Karina Anis, Geophysical Interpreter in Non-Conventional at YPF SA, told us how reservoirs are classified and the most important differences between conventional and unconventional reservoirs. She explained the geological and seismic characterization of unconventional shale reservoirs, their global distribution and over the Argentine territory, giving as an example the particular case of the geological shale formation "Vaca Muerta", located in southern Argentina.

In this Webinar, Laura Laguado Granado, Geophysical Engineer and Stimulation Engineer at YPF, told us how microseismic is related to the work carried out in the stimulation area, in charge of generating the designs to carry out the fractures and the monitoring of hydraulic stimulation and fracturing operations, and aspects of data acquisition, processing and interpretation with examples.

"Relief analysis using geographic information systems" by Fernando Lebinson
This workshop, developed by Dr. Fernando Lebinson, CONICET postdoctoral fellow, was carried out in two weeks through asynchronous e-learning modality, comprising a total of 2 modules of 3 units each.
"Relief analysis using geographic information systems" is an advanced software training of QGIS completely free, ideal for geoscience students who took the "Introduction to QGIS" course, also taught by Fernando, or who already had knowledge of the program. Students who participated learned some of the tools provided by the software for terrain analysis using Digital Elevation Models (DEM).

This workshop, developed by Dr. Fernando Lebinson, CONICET postdoctoral fellow, was carried out in two weeks through asynchronous e-learning modality, comprising a total of 2 modules of 4 units each.
It was completely free and open to all undergraduate students or recent graduates interested in learning to handle the basic tools of QGIS, a free and open source Geographic Information System. This program provides a growing range of capabilities through its basic functions and add-ons. It allows you to view, manage, edit and analyze data and design printable maps.
"Google Earth and its applications in geosciences" by Fernando Lebinson
This short workshop, developed by Dr. Fernando Lebinson, CONICET postdoctoral fellow, was taught in 5 days through asynchronous e-learning modality, comprising a total of 2 modules of 4 units each.
It was completely free and open to all undergraduate students or recent graduates interested in learning to handle the basic tools of Google Earth, a free program that allows you to travel around the planet through satellite images. A good instrument for studying geology, geography, remote sensing, geophysics, environment and other sciences.

“A CLEAN DROP" at the Conference on research, teaching and extension
The students and teachers involved in the “A CLEAN DROP: Research and extraction of clean waters for a semi-rural community in Leales, in the east side of Tucumán, Argentina” project appeared at the XV Conference held at the Faculty of Natural Sciences to disseminate the project to the rest of the scientific community of the National University of Tucumán.
“A CLEAN DROP: Research and extraction of clean waters for a semi-rural community in Leales, in the east side of Tucumán, Argentina” - Project for Geoscientists without Borders
The project aims at providing clean water for a semi-rural population located in the Department of Leales, province of Tucumán, in the northwest of Argentina. For this purpose, a hydrogeological characterization on the underground is needed in the selected zone in order to locate aquifers that can provide water suitable for human consumption as well as for farming uses.
The population of the area is mainly composed of rural workers living in distant houses far away from the roads. The lack of infrastructure in the area puts the inhabitants in situations of great vulnerability, where the lack of resources and basic services has a preponderant role. The supply of water for human consumption from shallow aquifers carries a risk to the health of the population. This is mainly due to the presence of organic pollutants, their high salinity and the existence of trace elements at levels above the maximum values established by national and international regulations, in relation to their suitability for human consumption.
This project seeks to propose the implementation of deep wells and the installation of pumping systems to respond to the population affected by water shortages. It progressed to phase II of the program Geoscientists without Borders but did not win the funding to carry out the project.

"Lava tube identification through ambient vibration measurement" by Florencia Anahí Santillán and Juan Manuel Losarcos (2nd SEG Latin America virtual student conference)
The UNT SEG Student Chapter is proud to have been represented at the 2nd SEG Latin America virtual student conference by Florencia Anahí Santillán and Juan Manuel Losarcos. Both geology students from the National University of Tucumán and the National University of La Pampa, respectively.
In 2020, "Open Space" opened a design challenge for a "lunar rover" weighing less than 2 kg, asking for the participation of young professionals. The winning team of the challenge, Spacebee Technologies, proposes a lava tube detection mission using accelerometers aboard a mini rover concept called "RoverTito". Florencia and Juan were part of the 21-student team that designed this device.
With growing interest in reaching Mars, the Moon has become a stepping stone in this space journey. In this context, studies show that lava tubes could be shelters against radiation, temperature and the dangers of micrometeorites on the lunar surface, allowing the establishment of human settlements and resupply stations on the way to Mars.
During the course of the investigation, the students received the collaboration of Francisco Calderón from the National Technological University - CEREDETEC, Gustavo W. Berotto from the National University of La Pampa - CONICET and Mauro I. Bernardi from the National University of La Pampa - UNLPam.
4th place in the world - Participation of the SEG UNT Student Chapter in the 2021 SEG Challenge Bowl
The SEG Challenge Bowl competition is an international contest testing student’s breadth and depth of knowledge about the field of geoscience. The quiz-show format results in intense competition as the contestants attempt to “buzz in” first with the answers to challenging geoscience questions. The contest itself is in the form of a short-answer multiple-choice quiz on topics in the geosciences (geology, geophysics, geography, and some geodesy), as well as some questions about the history of our science and SEG itself. The GEOTUC team, made up of Ariana Dulci and Germán Herrera, participated in the contest on behalf of the Student Chapter and reached the Finals, winning the fourth place. In this last instance, GEOTUC competed against 18 teams from renowned universities around the world.
Forum "Women in geosciences" - SEG Women’s Network Argentina Student Chapter
The participation of women in the development of science, in innovation and in the promotion of interdiscipline, are key to the scientific advancement of our time and we recognize that in recent decades women have gained more space in the scientific environment. The SEG UNT Student Chapter had the opportunity to collaborate in the SEG Women’s Network Argentina Student Chapter entitled: “Women in Geosciences” forum.
The event was led by the students María Fernanda Graneros from the National University of Tucumán and Natalí Alejandra Barría from the National University of Córdoba, in which the panelists, the professionals Ana Curcio and Raquel Villegas, shared their experiences both in the industry and in the investigation. The forum was a space for communication in real time, through a live broadcast on our YouTube channel, in which the students discussed and asked questions.
The professionals contributed their views regarding the female role in geosciences, around the problems of equity and inclusion in science and the progress made in recent years.
The objective of the forum was, in addition to promoting the work and research of Latina women in geosciences, to inspire future generations in Latin America to pursue careers related to, through academic events and distribution of information on education and job opportunities.
Events in 2020
During 2020, the pandemic did not allow face-to-face activities, however, we exceeded our geographical limits thanks to "virtuality", connecting with professionals from different Latin American countries to carry out activities with a national and international call.

Cycle of conferences
This cycle of conferences consisted of four talks organized by the SEG and AAPG student chapters of the National University of Tucumán, National University of Córdoba, University of Buenos Aires and National University of the South between December 14 and 17, 2020; in order to generate a joint activity between the different chapters and involve the community interested in different topics related to geosciences: Climate Change, Remote Sensing, Geothermal Resources, Characterization of unconventional reservoirs.
Our student chapter was in charge of the conference "Exploration of geothermal resources - Study case: Pismanta (Province of San Juan)" by Rodolfo Christiansen, who presented an exploratory work of the low temperature geothermal system of Pismanta, in the Andes Centrals of Argentina and showed the need to characterize geothermal resources in the early stages of exploration before carrying out drilling activities.

"The Moon, understanding our natural satellite" by Mauro Spagnuolo
In this Webinar, Mauro Spagnuolo, PhD and researcher at IDEAN (University of Buenos Aires-CONICET), explained important topics about lunar geology, starting from its formation, the history of the terrestrial natural satellite was reviewed, geology and its surface features were related, with its internal and orbital evolution. In addition, the importance it has for the Earth and the different interactions between these two celestial bodies were addressed.

"How to develop volcanic monitoring in Argentina?: The challenges in the creation of the Argentine observatory for volcanic surveillance of SEGEMAR" by Sebastián García
Argentina is a country who presents a complex situation regarding volcanic risk, where a total of 38 volcanoes are considered active. Although Argentina doesn’t have major cities near these volcanoes, the increase in economic activity and infrastructure near the Andean Cordillera will generate an increase in exposure to these dangers in the future. In addition, the volcanic activity on the border between Argentina and Chile makes a unique challenge relative to the monitoring of volcanoes and the management of volcanic emergencies worldwide. This is due to the fact that, as a result of the atmospheric circulation patterns in the region (from the west to the east), Argentina is exposed to the impacts of the ash and the dispersion of ash from the frequent explosive eruptions of Chilean volcanoes. In this conference, the geologist Sebastián García told us about the challenges carried out by the Argentine Geological Mining Service (SEGEMAR) in the creation of the Argentine Observatory for Volcanic Surveillance (OAVV). The first permanent volcanological observatory for the country.

"Geophysics as an essential part in determining the outer limit of the Argentine continental shelf" by María Alejandra Arecco.
In this webinar, María Alejandra Arecco, PhD in geophysics from the National University of San Juan, showed us how the outer limit of the continental shelf was determined under the aspects of international maritime law norms and geological and geophysical aspects in the Argentine continental margin. To achieve this, filters were applied to the potential fields, gravity and magnetism, seismic interpretation and 2D gravimetric modeling.
This analysis supported the National Commission for the Outer Limit of the Continental Shelf, whose work was presented in the presentation of the legal extension of the Argentine continental shelf on April 21, 2009 and was approved on April 17, 2017 in the framework of the Convention on the Rights of the Sea.

"Geophysical methods applied to geophysical investigations" by Julián Ramos
In this webinar about the study and geophysical exploration of groundwater, Engineer Julián Ramos presented four investigations carried out for hydrogeological purposes in different geological settings in Argentina and Uruguay, with sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks, in which different geophysical prospecting methods were used, combined with geomatic techniques. In a groundwater survey, the main objective of geophysical exploration is to map the geological environment in which water can exist. Different methods are used to study, in general, the physical properties of the subsoil in an indirect way, which can later be interpreted in geological and hydrogeological terms.

"From the Mountains to the Andes Mountain Range, passing through Antarctica. How much we can travel thanks to geology!" by Matías Barrionuevo
One of the great questions of a student about to finish his degree is what he can dedicate himself to, and many members of our chapter raised this question with us, that is why we contacted Matías Barrionuevo, an Argentine geologist widely experienced in the scientific field and oil industry, who thanks to geology he was able to work in the Andes, and in Antarctica.

"Home Office Challenge: Adapting in Times of Crisis and Pandemic" by Karina Anis
During the first stage of the pandemic and isolation, the energy sector had to adapt to virtuality and the crisis, to find out how all these changes impacted the industry, we summoned Karina Anis, geologist and geophysical interpreter of NOC development at YPF to tell us about the organizational structure of the energy industry; the activities carried out in Argentina by YPF; the global crisis due to low demand during April 2020 (where for the first time in history the reference barrel WTI oil was quoted at a negative price) and the challenges of the “Home Office” method.

First Latin American Forum: Geophysics, society and environment
The student chapters of SEG, AMGE (Mexican Association of Exploration Geophysicists), EAGE (European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers) and AAPG (American Association of Petroleum Geologists) from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and Peru organized, on Mondays and Fridays in June and July 2020, a series of webinars with different themes aimed at students and professionals from the most varied areas of science to increase student training, and spread the work of each chapter. The SEG Student Chapter UNT participated in the conference entitled "SEISMICS IN THE HIGH SEAS AS A TOOL FOR THE ENERGY DEVELOPMENT OF A COUNTRY" by Gabriel Olmedo. Geodetic and Geophysical Engineer from the National University of Tucumán. The webinar addressed issues related to the creation and evaluation of an offshore seismic project from a global perspective for the energetic development of a country.

Mini Workshop "Applied volcanic seismology" by Daniel Basualto Alarcón
In this mini-Workshop, taught by Daniel Arturo Basualto Alarcón, PhD, students learned to identify and classify the different types of volcanic earthquakes, interpret seismic activity and determine possible alert changes for an active volcano, through the SWARM program.
It was presented in two modules with cases of volcanoes in Chile and the monitoring that was carried out on them.

"Uses and applications of GNU octave" by Jorge Marcelo Durand
To introduce students to the use of programming tools and show the advantages they have in solving problems related to geosciences, engineering and scientific calculation, the workshop on USES AND APPLICATIONS OF GNU OCTAVE was developed, by Engineer Jorge Marcelo Durand. In this workshop, the students could know the use of these tools for advanced calculation, the basic but fluent handling of the software, becoming familiar with the syntax and the Octave programming language, and the creation of graphics for the analysis of solutions and visualization of results.
The workshop was carried out over 9 meetings, in which we had the participation of 12 students from the National University of Tucumán. The modality of the workshop was totally virtual, through classes in real time through the Google Meet platform, giving the possibility of answering doubts or questions at the same time.

First Virtual International Congress of Geology and Geophysics
CIVGEO 2020 was an online event that delivered lectures between July 23 and 25 and mini-courses in July and August. It was also a platform for the dissemination, promotion and discussion of scientific research linked to exploration, prospecting, strategies and updates in geology and geophysics. The event was supported by several SEG Student Chapters in Latin America who helped with the publicity and dissemination of the event. In return, they received free registration for chapter members and to be raffled off. Many members of the UNT student chapter were able to attend the event, and the steering committee presented their activities at a CIVGEO-related International Integration of American Student Chapters Summit.
INSTAGRAM / YOUTUBE LIVE: "Universitary on trial" by Florencia Sarasola
Throughout university and pre-university life we ask ourselves many questions: What will university life be like? What will life be like after college? That is why, with the intention of giving answers to these and more questions, we gave rise with AAPG La Plata Student Chapter to this Instagram / Youtube Live for all the public. Florencia Sararola is a geologist at the YPF company and with her full and energetic attitude she set out to answer the questions that boys and girls may have about the profession. We seek to collaborate by encouraging, through this talk, the dissemination of scientific careers, their importance and the role they have in today's world.
We open a door to let the curiosity of the spectators pass and generate more opportunities for the training of future geoscientists.
Energy Switch Case Competition
Energy Switch Case is an international competition held by the Switch Energy Alliance that in 2020 was developed virtually. The objective of the competition was to challenge university teams to generate, through critical thinking and research, proposals for multidisciplinary solutions in the short, medium and long term to serious energy problems in different parts of the world, in order to seek a transition towards the energy future sustainable and equitable.
The SEG UNT student chapter presented its team formed by 3 advanced undergraduate students and a graduate student, from the geology career, who with the support of their mentor, Jack Trueblood, assigned by the Switch Energy Alliance, sought solutions that generate a significant change in the life of Haitians, Switch Energy Alliance sent 3 basic descriptions of the conditions of this country in an energetic emergency, and they proceeded to the investigation of this country in terms of energy, economy, socio-cultural, environmental, health aspects, among others. The team developed an energetic strategy on three levels:
-Short term through the implementation of briquettes and solar spheres.
-Medium term through the implementation of bioenergetic plants.
- Long term through the implementation of hydroelectric plants.
Finally, a plan was developed for each of the stages based on their feasibility, sustainability and adaptation to the Haitian way of life. They evaluated the impacts on different aspects of Haitian life in both urban and rural areas; and they calculated the financing, periodicity of development and the strategic points in which the project would be developed to benefit the largest possible number of population. In addition, alliance strategies that could be carried out to finance the country's energy growth.
All of this was presented in a final presentation video that was evaluated by international judges. The students had the opportunity to witness debates on energy problems and possible solutions, they met university students throughout the world and participated in energy debates representing Argentina and its problems. It was a very fruitful experience with a lot of growth on an academic and personal level.
