Yoram Shoham has simply done it all, and in the midst of his richly varied career has contributed broadly to the worldwide geophysical community through energetic and creative service on behalf of the SEG.

Careers in exploration geophysics offer opportunities for a wide range of directions that one can chooseufield operations, data processing, interpretation, research, technology, and management, seismic, potential methods, and electrical methods. Seemingly unable to make a choice, Yoram Shoham has simply done it all, and in the midst of his richly varied career has contributed broadly to the worldwide geophysical community through energetic and creative service on behalf of the SEG. How fitting that he be honored as recipient of Life Membership, which is granted to individuals who have voluntarily rendered exceptionally meritorious service to the Society.
Indeed, Yoram's dedication in rendering service to the Society, and to the geophysical community at large, shows itself as a lifelong commitment that continues to build steam notwithstanding his ever-increasing management and technological responsibilities with Shell International Exploration and Production.
Yoram's service to the SEG includes two years as Chairman of the Research Committee, where he led the organization of a number of workshops and special sessions at SEG Annual Meetings, as well as summer workshops. Besides serving as a member of the Technical Program Committee for several SEG Annual Meetings, he has been and continues to be a particularly active member of the International Affairs and Interpretation committees.
Playing a key role in recent international activities of the SEG, Yoram has served as Technical Program Chairman of the SEG/Moscow '92 International Conference and Exposition and the SEG/CPS Beijing '93 International Conference and Exposition. He has since served on the technical program committees for the Rio '95 and St. Petersburg '95 conventions and organized the Moscow '97 international conference. His many and creative efforts on behalf of cooperation between the SEG and organizations in Russia earned him the Pioter Kpitsa Honorary Medal of the Russian Academy of Natural Science for creating bridges between Russian and Western geosciences.
Further fostering goals of the geophysical community, Yoram has chaired the advisory committee to the Department of Geophysics at the Colorado School of Mines and served on a similar committee for the Earth Sciences School at Stanford University.
Graduating with honors from Tel Aviv University with a B.Sc. degree in applied mathematics and physics, Yoram entered the geophysics field through graduate studies at the Colorado School of Mines, after which he returned to Tel Aviv University where he received his M.Sc. and Ph.D. in geophysics. Further preparing him in all geophysical methods, including both seismic and nonseismic applications, Yoram conducted postdoctoral research with the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Texas in Austin.
Yoram's broad industrial experience in both research and operations started with Geonics Corporation, where, within his six years there, he became executive vice-president in charge of oil technical, operational, business, and marketing areas, with projects in the United States, Far East, Latin America, and Europe. In 1983, he joined Shell Oil at the Houston E&P research and development laboratory. He has since worked in technical and supervisory positions with Shell Western E&P, as manager of the Applied Geophysics Research Department at Shell Development Company, and as chief geophysicist of Pecten International Company (a subsidiary of Shell Oil), where he later became vice-president of E&P Market and Business Development. Since 1996, he has held the position of manager of geophysical advice, with Shell International Exploration and Production B.V., in Rijswijk, The Netherlands.
Throughout these advances into and through challenging positions of responsibility in management, planning, and technological leadership, Yoram's commitment to the vitality of research within the industry, to support of university programs, and to fostering scientific and technological exchange among geophysicists worldwide remains an underlying threadua core of his being that ensures that, for years into the future, the international geophysical community in general and the SEG in particular will continue to benefit from Yoram's dedication to serve, and proficiency at doing so with distinction.
