LAND SURVEY INSTRUMENTS are required to accurately define the geographic location and elevation of all geophysical data measurements or observations. These geodetic survey data are needed for computation or analysis of the geophysical data. The survey coordinates are also necessary to permit mapping the geophysical properties and to define the location of prospective drilling prospects. Generally, the transit has been used to survey gravity and magnetic observation sites, through the 1970's, and in some instances today, the alidade has been employed primarily to survey seismic energy source and detector stations. Geophysical flagging is used traditionally to direct the field crew to the geophysical survey location and to identify observation stations.
