Society of Exploration Geophysicists Student chapter IIT Roorkee is an active Student Chapter, established in 2014, located in Roorkee, Uttarakhand. The chapter provides students the opportunity to develop and improve their professional - leadership and networking - and technical geophysical skills.
General information
The Society of Exploration Geophysicists is a not-for-profit organization supporting 27,000 members from 128 countries. It was founded in 1930 and provides information, tools, and resources vital to advancing the science of exploration geophysics, fostering common scientific interests, supporting humanitarian efforts, accelerating geophysical innovation and much more. It fulfills its mission through its publications, conferences, forums, Web sites, and educational opportunities.
Student Chapter
The Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee SEG Student chapter aims towards making coveted efforts to pursue and disseminate geo-scientific knowledge and activities among the fellow students at the Department of Earth Sciences IIT Roorkee.
SEG/Chevron Student Leadership Symposium
In 2012 SEG IIT Roorkee got the first opportunity to participate in the SLS(Student Leadership Symposium).In 2016 the student delegation who got this opportunity was Nikhil Singh from Geophysics Batch 2013. He also participated in SEG Challenge Bowl.
Events in 2020
Field Trip to North-Eastern States
A field trip was organized to the north-eastern states of Assam and Meghalaya for the students of 3rd year Geological Technology in the month of March 2020. The students studied the functioning and working of oil rig of ONGC at Golaghat Assam. They examined the mining process at Oil Rig of ONGC at Golaghat, Assam.
On subsequent days, they visited the North Eastern Space Application Centre, Meghalaya and experienced the operation of various satellite applications like Earth Observation Applications Mission, ISRO Geo-sphere Biosphere Programme, Satellite Communications, Disaster Management Support and Space Science Programmes.
Geophile Challenge Series
Adapting with the pandemic and lockdown situation at hand, SEG IIT Roorkee conducted an interactive quiz series through its Facebook page. The series was titled ‘Geophile Challenge Series’ and included questions from the field of geology and geophysics. The initiative was welcomed and it received good responses. The duration of the series was 20 days and over its course, it reached around 500 people with more than 200 reactions including likes, comments and shares.
Ananya Mittal, GT 3rd year, spearheaded the team responsible for organising the quiz. Samarth Pran, GPT 2nd year, was the overall co-ordinator working with Kanishka Sugotra, Tushar Kumar Vyaas and Anubhav Roysha, all GPT 1st year students. Kanishka was responsible for designing while the others prepared the content.
CSIR - NGRI Field Training for GPT
The Field trip was organized between Jan 6, 2020 to Jan 10, 2020 for the 3rd yearites of GPT in CSIR- National Geophysical Research Institute in guidance of Dr. Sagarika Mukhopadhyay and Dr. Pallavi Chattopadhyay.
On the very first day, Dr. Devendra Kumar one of the scientist at CSIR-NGRI, introduced the students with major R&D Groups Activities which include expertise in a variety of geophysical, geochemical, geological techniques like Seismology, Magnetotellurics, GPS, Paleo-seismology, Structural geology, Controlled source seismics, Gravity and Magnetics, Geochemistry, Geochronology, Paleomagnetism, Planetary geology, Geomagnetism, Airborne geophysics, Shallow subsurface geophysics and Rock Mechanics, Hydrochemistry, Paleo-environmental studies and Modeling and simulation of Earth processes.
The next day, they paid a visit to the Geochemistry/Geochronology labs, and also the Siesmological Observatory where they learnt a lot about seismology and its early and recent sophisticated instruments. A demo of equipment, data processing and analysis was given for the field of Magnetotellurics (MT). They were also briefed about the Gravity Survey Data Acquisition.
A lot of other fields and subjects were introduced in the following days and the students got to visit many sophisticated labs of the institute as well. In short, this educational training turned out to be very informative and important for broad exposure of geophysical world. Students came across many new and fascinating information and brief knowledge of sophisticated and rare instruments.
Events in 2019
Doon International School, Riverside Campus
The SEG Student Chapter IITR collaborated with UPES SEG Student Chapter and organized an event on 8th September 2019 which was attended by class 11-12 students of Doon International School. A brief overview of what geosciences are, what we can do with geophysics, oil and gas exploration, safety in oil and gas exploration was given by the speakers. Mr. Gautam Shekhawat and Mr. Samarth Pran from SEG student chapter IITR taught various topics through slides presentation. The event was very successful as the students attend in large numbers. It was followed by a 30 min quiz on the same topics taught in the slides. Also, the three winners received certificates from UPES student chapter.
Internship Talk
The SEG IITR student chapter organised an Internship talk on 4 September 2019. The event was not only actively participated by 3rd year but also by first and second year students. This event was aimed to make the students aware about different internship opportunities in core as well as in non-core field. The students were briefed about the whole internship applying procedure, moreover speakers shared their personal experiences with the students.
The event went really successful as the juniors were so excited and amazed to listen to their amazing seniors who had been to different countries for their internship. It inspired all the attendees to work hard for what they aim for and crack such amazing internships in the future!
Gateway to Geosciences
The event "Gateway to Geoscience" was organized by SEG student chapter IITR in collaboration with Indian Geophysical Union (IGU) Student Chapter IIT Roorkee and Society of Petroleum Geophysicists on 8 August 2019. The event was very successful as the freshers attended the event enthusiastically in large numbers. The event was hosted by Ms. Yukti Gupta and Mr. Abhishek Kumar followed by the presentation by Mr. Samarth Pran and Mr. Devang Trivedi. As the event progressed Mr. Kushagra Agarwal gave an introduction of the AAPG Student Chapter IIT Roorkee. The event progressed with the introduction of other student chapters SEG, SPG, IGU, AAPG to familiarise the students with objective, reach and working of these groups. One of our faculty Prof. Ravi Sharma also added his precious words about the event and the role these groups plays in bridging the gap between Students and the Department. In the end, the Movie Mania Quiz (A fun quiz on movies based on Geosciences) was hosted by Mr. Yash Saraf and organized by SEG Student Chapter and the winners were awarded exciting prizes.
Field Trip 1
To make the students aware of basic methods and processes involved in the field of geophysics, a 7-day long field training was organized in the first week of January,2019 to Gondapipri, (nearest railway station: Balharshah) Maharashtra (India) for the sophomores of Geological Technology. The 31 sophomores learned to identify and measure the attitude of various geological features exposed in the field. They also performed a modal analysis of different conglomerate samples and read and located objects on toposheets. They did preliminary sedimentary facies analysis and successfully reconstructed the paleoenvironmental conditions of the field area, giving the firsthand reconstruction of the geomorphological features of the study area under the guidance of Prof. Pitambar Pati, Dept. of Earth Sciences, IIT Roorkee.
Field Trip 2
Another 7 days field training was conducted during the 1st week of January 2019 to Rishikesh, Khajnawar Rao, Baadsahibaag (Uttrakhand) India for the sophomores of Geophysical Technology. The students learned to identify and measure the attitude of various geological features exposed in the field. They were shown Main Frontal Thrust (MFT) and regions of carbonaceous phyllite and located objects on toposheets. They did preliminary sedimentary facies analysis and successfully reconstructed the paleoenvironmental conditions of the field area, giving the firsthand reconstruction of the geomorphological features of the study area under the guidance of Prof. Sandeep Singh, Dept. of Earth Sciences, IIT Roorkee following their visit to Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology, Dehradun (Uttrakhand) India

Guest Lecture By Mr. T.R. Murali Mohan
IIT Roorkee SEG Student Chapter hosted the Guest Lecture under the guidance of Dr. Ashutosh Chamoli (Faculty advisor, IIT Roorkee SEG student chapter). It was delivered by Mr. T.R. Murali Mohan(Ex. Group General Manager(GP) and Head Processing GEOPIC, ONGC Ltd.) on ‘Recent Advances in Seismic Data Processing’. Over 40+ students attended the guest lecture and it proved to be highly informative for them. The lecture provided the students with a unique opportunity to acquaint themselves with the latest technological advancements in Seismic Data Processing.
Gateway to Geosciences
Students of different years came together in an interactive session to motivate the student of earth sciences and also share their experience. The session consisted of possible future scopes of earth sciences in the long run. It was followed by a short presentation by Dr. Ashutosh Chamoli (Faculty advisor, IIT Roorkee SEG student chapter) on the research internship opportunities of the UK-NERC program. At the end of the event "Movie Mania Quiz" was organized for the students. This fun and informative event saw overwhelming participation of more than 20 teams with each team having 4 members. The first-year students felt motivated towards the field of earth sciences after hearing about the experiences of their fellow seniors. We had an overwhelming response from the students with over 110+ students participating in the event. This event provided a platform for the faculties and students to come together and discuss the various future prospects of the field of Earth Sciences.
AGU Webcast
IIT Roorkee SEG student chapter recently organized an AGU Webcast on the underground Nuclear Test declared by North Korea on September 3, 2017. The webcast discussed various studies which talked about various geophysical effects produced by this test. We really hope to see more and more enthusiastic participation from you all as many more exciting events are in the pipeline for this semester.

Museum Visit 1
The Department of Earth Sciences, IIT Roorkee recently inaugurated a state-of-the-art geology museum in the department premises on 31st January 2018. The museum is named H. B. Medlicott Museum of Geology and contains a wide range of collected rock samples and fossils, some of them as old as 50 Ma. The museum also contains a separate region for fluorescent rock minerals like fluorite and ruby which are put under UV light. The museum also has a seismometer used for measuring ground motion during Earthquakes.
A group of students from St. Anns School, Roorkee visited the museum. IIT Roorkee SEG Student chapter took the opportunity and considered this as a start for the student outreach program. Our team members helped the students in understanding various features present in the rocks and gave them a brief glimpse of Geology. The students were curious enough and were quite amazed by the various interesting geological structures they were shown.

Delhi Public School, Merrut
A talk was organized by the chapter for the students at DPS, Meerut defining them about the future opportunities after 10th Standard and also giving them a brief knowledge about Engineering and its different Branches including the Earth Sciences and various opportunities in the field. They were briefed about the Society of Exploration Geophysicist and the working of Student Chapter in IIT Roorkee.
FIIT JEE, Merrut
A talk was organized by the chapter for the students at FIIT JEE Coaching Centre, Meerut defining them about the future opportunities after 12th Standard and also giving them a brief knowledge about Engineering and its different Branches including the Earth Sciences and various opportunities in the field. They were briefed about the Society of Exploration Geophysicist and the working of Student Chapter in IIT Roorkee.
Baladi Village
We have organized an awareness campaign in the village Baladi which is located around 60km from the State capital (Dehradun). The audience included 60 students, aged 10-16 years. We presented them some basic preventive measures during an earthquake since this region is in the seismically active zone. They were amazed by the presentations and thus motivated the team to conduct much more such awareness drives in the future.
Outreach in Uttrakhand
What was thought of a dream has finally become a reality. IIT Roorkee SEG Student Chapter has achieved its biggest and largest feat so far. From being merely a discussion in our SEG team to being executed in over 24 schools of Uttarakhand, interacting with the youth in every village, big and small, we are extremely proud and happy to announce that our outreach initiative - “Stretching the limits!” has finally come to a successful end. IIT Roorkee has been a premier institute in the state of Uttarakhand since the 1900s, and so we took it upon ourselves to educate our state about Geosciences. We felt the need for such a program because only about ten percent of all colleges/universities in India provide graduation courses in this subject.
The aim of this endeavor was to interact with the students who were on the verge of deciding their career paths and motivating them to pursue this slightly off-beat course as their field of study. We targeted school students aged 14-18, interacted with them about what the subject comprises of, the importance of Geosciences and the fruits of pursuing it. It was a daunting task at first covering an area of approximately 55,000 square kilometers, which is almost twice the area of Belgium. Three teams of 4-5 Student Chapter members each in a span of five days covered three separate trails in the state leading to Joshimath, Paonta Sahib and Nainital respectively. This proved to be a rather rewarding exercise not just on a personal front, but also for the team. We came together as a group in the most fragile circumstances, worked in landslide-prone areas and took up responsibilities for each other that helped us grow.
Model School Rajkiya Inter Collge
A talk was organized by the chapter for the students at Model School Rajkiya Inter Collge, I.D.P.L. Virbhadra, Rishikesh, Dehradun(U.K.) defining them about the future opportunities after 10th Standard and also giving them a brief knowledge about Engineering and its different Branches including the Earth Sciences and various opportunities in the field. They were briefed about the Society of Exploration Geophysicist and the working of IIT Roorkee SEG Student Chapter. It was organized on October 15, 2018, and was attended by around 200 students of the school.
Kendriya Vidyalaya
A talk was organized by the chapter for the students at Kendriya Vidyalaya Birpur, Garhicant, Dehradun(U.K.) defining them about the future opportunities after 10th Standard and also giving them a brief knowledge about Engineering and its different Branches including the Earth Sciences and various opportunities in the field. They were briefed about the Society of Exploration Geophysicist and the working of Student Chapter in IIT Roorkee. It was organized on November 3, 2018, and was attended by around 250 students of the school.

The region for the field training was Chutmalpur-Dehradun and nearby regions of Himalayan Terrain. The students in their 3rd year of UG Programmes, namely Geophysical Technology were given hands-on experience of various types of equipment used in Geophysical Surveys. The surveys covered various Gravity, Magnetic, Electromagnetic, GPR and MASW methods to study the subsurface properties. Students collected and interpreted the data using various software like MATLAB, ELECTRAPro, PROSYS etc The field trip was guided by Prof. Mohammad Israil, Dept. of Earth Sciences IIT Roorkee. The field trip was followed by three days education tour at Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Dehradun.
Field Trip 2, 2018
To make the students aware of basic methods and processes involved in the field of geophysics, A 9-day long field training was organized in the first week of December 2018 by the Dept. of Earth Sciences. The region for the field training was Kayad, Rampura, Agucha, Neem Ka Thana, Khetriand and nearby regions of Rajasthan. The students in their 3rd year of UG Programmes, namely Geological Technology were given hands-on experience of mines. It was mainly for the mineral exploration through mines and learned how to predict and economically extract the minerals from a large area. The field trip was guided by Prof. Biplab Bhattacharya, Dept. of Earth Sciences IIT Roorkee. The field trip was followed by three days education tour at Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, Dehradun, Uttrakhand.

Field Trip 2
Another week-long field-trip was organized for the students of Geological Technology in their 3rd academic year during the first week of December 2017. Students were exposed to oil drilling site of ONGC, India's largest oil & gas company in the state of Assam. They also visited the respective headquarters and Nazira (Regional Geoscience Laboratory) where they were introduced to drilling, E&P Business Model, Seismic Data Acquisition, and interpretation. They also visited various labs such as Paleontology lab, Sedimentology lab etc. where they were shown various drill and core samples.
THOMSO QUIZ
A quiz was organized by the Student Chapter during the cultural festival of IIT Roorkee(Thomso). The location of the quiz was in the Lecture Theaters which provided us with a very diverse audience which expanded the knowledge of our field among many students. This quiz comprised of basic questions about the earth and its processes. The winners of the quiz were also awarded.

Guest Lecture By Mr. Shri S. Mahapatra
L.N. Kailasam Memorial Lecture was delivered by Shri S. Mahapatra, Director of Oil India Limited (E&P) on the topic "E&P Landscape in India: A peep to the future." The guest lecture was attended by 20 faculty members, 30 research scholars and 120 undergraduate students. The event was followed by poster presentation competition for final year students and research scholars. The top three poster were awarded with prizes of 3000 INR, 1500 INR, 500 INR and other participants were awarded by consolation prizes.
Guest Lecture By Dr. J.V.S.S Narayan Murty
A guest lecture was conducted by Dr. J.V.S.S Narayan Murty (G&G Software Consultant to ONGC and GERMI, Chennai, India) on the topic- Passive seismic tomography (PST), QC and application of PST derived velocity for seismic imaging. The guest lecture was attended by 15 faculty members, 25 research scholars, and 80 undergraduate students. This lecture was part of the honorary lecture series by SEG
Movie Mania Quiz
The Earth Science Movie Mania Quiz- a quiz on movies that are related to the environment and earth sciences. The quiz involved 3 rounds- 1.MCQ’s Round 2. Visual Clip Round 3. Buzzer Rapid Fire Rounds. This fun and informative event saw an overwhelming participation of more than 20 teams with each team having 4 members. The event was organized in association with Cognizance, the annual technical festival of IIT Roorkee, which is also Asia’s second largest tech fest. The average annual footfall in Cognizance is about 15,000 with a social outreach of over 300,000 well spread over the country. Winners bagged cash prizes worth INR 3,000, followed by runners-up with INR 1,500 and consolidation prizes were also awarded.

Field Camp 1

A 7-day long field training was organized in the Himalayan Foothills near Sansarpur-Behrauli-Jhinjhouli starting from November 28, 2016. The guiding members included faculties, Dr. Kamal and Dr. Ravi Sharma, and 5 research scholars. The purpose of selecting the field area (i.e. Sansarpur-Mehrauli-Jhinjhouli) is to study the Dehradun re-entrant. The undergraduate students of Geophysical Technology performed various surveys like Gravity, Magnetic, ERT, GPR & MASW surveys, processed and successfully interpreted the data using various software tools (MATLAB, ELECTRAPro, PROSYS, RES2DINV, ZOND-IP)

In this event, the pre-final year students came and talked about their summer research projects in the UK, Germany etc. They gave a presentation about their work and the scope of Earth Sciences in the long run. It was followed by a short presentation by Dr. Ashutosh Chamoli (Faculty advisor, IIT Roorkee SEG student chapter) on the research internship opportunities of the UK-NERC program. We had an overwhelming response from the students with over 80+ students participating in the event. This event provided a platform for the faculties and students to come together and discuss the various future prospects of the field of Earth Sciences.
Guest Lecture By Dr. V.P Dimri
IIT Roorkee SEG Student Chapter hosted the SEG Honorary Guest Lecture under the guidance of Dr. Ashutosh Chamoli (Faculty advisor, IIT Roorkee SEG student chapter). It was delivered by Dr. V. P. Dimri (Padma Shri Recipient, a 4th highest civilian award in the Republic of India, AGU Lorentz Awardee) on ‘CO2 sequestration- Enhanced Oil Recovery’. Over 50+ students attended the guest lecture and it proved to be highly informative for them. The lecture provided the students with a unique opportunity to acquaint themselves with the latest technological advancements in oil recovery

Mr Chirag Tyagi, Area Geophysicist, Schlumberger Geosolutions, UK delivered a lecture on the topic ‘Concepts and Advances in Seismic Data Acquisition, Processing and Imaging’. The guest lecture was attended by 15 faculty members, 20 research scholars and 60 undergraduate students. The attendees gained valuable insights into the ongoing advancements and the industrial developments in the field of seismic prospecting. The interaction with Mr Chirag Tyagi has led to the future dissertation work of one of the students under his guidance.
