Introduction to the SEG Open Data Gateway

There is geophysical data you can download from the internet or request to be shipped to you. This wiki documents data that is readily available. Key parts of the data documentation are:

2D Land Seismic Data

ALASKA 2D LAND LINE 31-81

2D land data from the National Petroleum reserve Alaska. This is a short line with small statics. There is ground roll and noise bursts, but there is also good signal. Data includes unprocessed prestack data, final stack, and images of previous stack. Scripts for processing with Seismic Unix are available. This is a good line to start experimenting with open data and Seismic Unix (su) because there is a full processing sequence including data download, reformat, header loading, gain, prestack fk filter, brute velocity estimation, brute stack, residual statics, final velocity analysis, final stack, and two types of post stack migration (phase shift and Kirchhoff). In comes with executables for su release 43R1 on Linux, which is handy if su is not installed on your system. This data is provided by USGS.

ALASKA 2D LAND LINE 16-81

2D land data from the National Petroleum reserve Alaska. This line intersects 31-81 and the processing sequence is the same as used for 31-81. Seismic Unix scripts and a poster are available. The ground roll is weaker and there are fewer noise bursts. There is a larger statics problem and more structure between 1 and 2 seconds than on line 31-81. This data is provided by USGS.

2D Marine Seismic Data

US EAST COAST DEEP WATER LINE 32

This 242 km line is collected from a water depth of over 5 seconds to less than .3 seconds. There are strong multiples, diffractors, and a bottom simulating reflector related the the gas hydrate. This data is provided by USGS.

3D Land Seismic Data

TEAPOT DOME 3D SURVEY

A land 3D data set from Wyoming. Post stack data, well logs, production history, and GIS data can be downloaded from the internet after obtaining an FTP password. Unprocessed prestack data available by mail. This data is provided by RMOTC and the U.S. Department of Energy

NORTH SEA NORNE FIELD

The first data package was released in May 2009 to be used by selected researchers (including masters and PhD students) within the IO Center; this includes users from NTNU, Stanford University, TNO, TU Delft and Sintef. Gravity Data

This is a satellite acquired data, curated by UCSD and publicly available at UCSD website.

There is also the GOCE data and recently there was the launch of the Cryosat, both by the European Space Agency.

SEG MODELS

SEG Salt Model 1996

This model was built by the SEG research committee, and created as part of the Advanced Computational Technology Initiative, in partnership with US national labs. The bulk of the computation was done at Sandia and Los Alamos labs. The full datatset was not retained, but a variety of subsets are available:

  • SEG C3 Narrow Azimuth Subset
  • SEG Wide Azimuth Subset
  • SEG 45 Shot Subset
