Michael Schoenberger, candidate for President-Elect, has served SEG and the exploration geophysics community in numerous capacities since becoming an Active Member in 1970. From 1987 to 1989 as SEG Editor, he led the GEOPHYSICS editorial team and served on two SEG Executive Committees as well as TLE's Editorial Board. The record number of titles published while Mike was Publications Committee Chairman resulted in publication sales twice that of any previous term and, for the fist time, a profit for SEG; he also served the publications effort as Geophysical Development Series Editor. While Reasearch Committee Chairman, he initiated the annual summer workshop, an important forum, now in its ninth year; for the first (Deconvolution) and third (Near-Surface Effects) workshops, Mike was General Chairman. He also organized Annual Meeting workshops on Seismic Deconvolution, Velocity, and Amplitudes and served on seven technical program committees and on other standing committees.
In addition to his SEG service, Mike has been active in the Geophysical Society of Houston. Currently GSH President, he was also 1st Vice-President, Section Representative, and Technical Program Chairman of the first Annual SEG Gulf Coast Meeting.
During his 25 years with Exxon, Mike has both managed and conducted significant research in many areas. His published papers include those on array design, streamer noise characteristics, wavelet processing, and apparent attenuation and dispersion. Recognition outside of SEG resulted in his selection as editor for a special issue of the Proceedings of the IEEE on seismic signal processing.
Mike's extensive operational experience includes interpreting seismic data at Imperial Oil in Calgary and supervising Exxon USA=92s problem data processing. Currently with Exxon Exploration Company, he coordinates the interpretation of gravity and magnetic data and consults on seismic modeling and data processing.
Mike received his BS from Carnegie Mellon University and his MS and PhD from the University of Illinois.
