Mark Kachanov received a Ph.D. (1981) in solid mechanics from Brown University, Rhode Island. He worked at Rutgers University, New Jersey, for two years as an assistant professor. In 1982, Kachanov became a faculty member at Tufts University, Massachusetts, where he is now a professor of mechanical engineering. His research is focused on microstructure-property connections for materials with multiple cracks and other inhomogeneities, with applications to rock mechanics.
Kachanov has published one book and more than 110 articles. He is a recipient of the Alexander von Humboldt Award for senior scientists in 1996 and is an editor of Letters in Fracture and Micromechanics.
Professor Kachanov joined Tufts in 1982 as an Associate Professor after an appointment as an Assistant Professor at Rutgers University. He became a Full Professor at Tufts University in 1988. He is an Editor-in-Chief of the "International Journal of Engineering Sciences" and of "Letters in Fracture and Micromechanics". His Science Citation Index is 3,000.
