John P. Woods (25 February 1903 - 26 January 2005) served as the 1960-1961 SEG President. He served as SEG Vice-President from 1956-1957. He was also an SEG Honorary Member.
Biography for SEG President Elect Candidacy, 1960 [1]
J. P. Woods, Candidate for President, graduated from the University of Texas in 1925 with the degree of B.S. in Electrical Engineering. He received the M.S. degree in 1930 and a Ph.D. in Physics in 1932 from the same University. From 1933 to 1940, he was in the Geophysical Laboratory of the Shell Oil Company. From 1941 to 1944, he was in the Radio Research Laboratory of Harvard University. Since 1944, he has been Director of the Geophysical Laboratory of The Atlantic Refining Company.
Dr. Woods is a member of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the Dallas Geophysical Society, the European Association of Exploration Geophysicists, the American Geophysical Union, and the Seismological Society of America. He is Past President of the Dallas Geophysical Society and a past Vice-President of the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. He has been Chairman of the SEG Publications Committee, and is now Chairman of the SEG Research Committee.
