R. Gerhard Pratt received a B.Sc (1980) in engineering physics from Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada. He received an M.Sc. (1986) and a Ph.D. (1989) in geophysics from Imperial College, London, and held an NSERC postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Physics at the University of Toronto from 1990 to 1992. He worked for Schlumberger as a wireline engineer from 1980 to 1985. Pratt was the Elf-Aquitaine lecturer in geophysics at Imperial College from 1992 to 1998, and since then he has been an associate professor of geophysics at Queen's University, Canada. In 2001, he was a Wiess visiting professor at Rice University, Houston. He is a past associate editor of GEOPHYSICS
