Two different methods of migration are implemented in the frequency-wavenumber domain. The Stolt method is exact for a constant-velocity medium, while the phase-shift method is exact for a medium with vertical velocity variations. The Stolt method can be extended to the case of a medium with lateral velocity variations judged to be acceptable for time migration. The phase-shift method also can be extended to handle lateral velocity variations. One extension, phase-shift-plus-interpolation scheme, accommodates lateral variations in velocity by interpolating between the results of migration using a group of vertically-varying velocity functions. Another extension, phase-shift-plus-correction, applies an additional extrapolation operator at each depth step to account for differences between the laterally varying velocity field and vertically varying-only velocity function used for phase-shift migration. The phase-shift method also has been extended to image turning waves associated with salt overhang structures.
