Basin and petroleum system modeling consists of two main stages: model building and forward modeling. Model building involves constructing a structural model and identifying the chronology of deposition and physical properties of each layer. Forward modeling performs calculations on the model to simulate sediment burial, pressure and temperature changes, kerogen maturation and hydrocarbon expulsion, migration and accumulation. Calibration compares model results with independent measurements to allow refinement of the model (Al-Hajeri et al., 2009)
