A layer is regarded as ‘‘thin’’ when its thickness is less than 1/4 of the dominant wavelength. The thickness of individual thin layers cannot be determined by time measurements but sometimes can be determined by amplitude measurements (see tuning effect), whereas the thickness of a thick layer is determined mainly from time difference measurements.
