The concept that all raypaths which pass through a spatial region will be affected in the same way and that the total effect for any element can be obtained by summing up along the raypath. The contributions for the different regions can be obtained statistically from a multitude of observations. Used for determining and removing changes because of statics, amplitude effects, and waveshape changes (surface-consistent statics, surface-consistent amplitude, surface-consistent deconvolution). See Sheriff and Geldart (1995, 18, 303–305).
