Backward propagation of the wavefield in time. Often uses a finite-difference approximation to the wave equation. Time samples from a seismic section are used as the surface boundary condition for a wave-equation extrapolator and successive time samples are used until the surface is reached, when the image is completed. See McMechan (1983).
