1. The velocity of any given phase (such as a trough) or a wave of single frequency; it may differ from group velocity because of dispersion. Sometimes called ‘‘trough’’ velocity or ‘‘peak’’ velocity. See Figure D-16. 2. The velocity perpendicular to a surface of constant phase in anisotropic media. See Figure A-14. 3. Sometimes means apparent velocity (q.v.).
