(mer kāl’ ē) A descriptive scale that indicates the degree of shaking at a specific location as a result of an earthquake. The original scale was devised in 1902. An abridged version of the modified Mercalli scale (devised in 1931) is given in Figure M-9. Compare magnitude of earthquake. Named for Giuseppi Mercalli (1850–1914), Italian geologist.
