(gaus' ē ∂n) A normal or bell-shaped distribution. A set of values so distributed about a mean value m that the probability ${\displaystyle \varepsilon (\Delta a)}$ of a value lying within a small interval ${\displaystyle \Delta a}$ centered at the point a is

where ${\displaystyle \sigma }$ is the standard error and ${\displaystyle \varepsilon (\Delta a)}$ is called the error function.
