A variable reference used in areas of appreciable topography. The elevation of the datum is varied to lessen the sensitivity to the approximations in static corrections if a constant-elevation datum were used and to compensate for velocity variations because of the increased loading of the topography. The relief on a one-third floating datum is one-third of the surface elevation above a flat plane. Tilted plane datums are also used sometimes.
