FIG. K-2. The Kirchhoff diffraction equation expresses the wave amplitude at a point P that is several wavelengths from a diffracting aperture in the plane B. If α and β are the angles between the normal to B, the amplitude at P can be expressed as an integral over the aperture area, σ: P=–(1/2λ)∫∫(1/rs)(cosα–cosβ)exp[j(r+s)/λ]dσ.
