1. A mathematical operation giving the rate of change (slope) of a function with respect to some variable. The equivalent operation for discrete series is convolution with the operator [–1, +1]. 2. Separation according to some criteria, such as particle size. 3. Separation of a magma into fractions of different bulk composition.
