Usually a frequency or phasing effect, often not defined precisely and hence dependent upon subjective judgment. 2. The recognizable aspect of a graph or picture that identifies it with some situation. 3. A single letter, numeral, or special symbol in a computer system. See also byte, with which it is sometimes used interchangeably.
