Dictionary:Algebraic reconstruction technique (ART)

A method for solving a large set of linear equations, such as the traveltime equations in tomography (q.v.). The method is an iterative ‘‘row-action’’ approach since it projects solutions for one equation at a time and is similar to the Kaczmarz method of numerical analysis. See Gordon (1974), Herman et al. (1973), or Stewart (1991).
