(helm’ hōltz) A pair of coaxial coils separated by a distance equal to their radius, which provides a nearly constant magnetic field over a large volume between the coils. It permits an accurate calculation of the magnetic field between the coils and is used in calibration of magnetometers and nulling an ambient magnetic field for magnetic measurements. Named for Hermann Ludwig von Helmholtz (1821–1894), German scientist.
